My home page
My name is Sarah Addyman and I'm a freelance copywriter, business writer and journalist based in Manchester.
I provide editorial, PR, marketing, web, communications and business writing services to a variety of companies, from financial organisations to academic ones. I also offer freelance copywriter services to media agencies.
I cover the whole of the UK, but offer my North West customers the additional services of on-site visits and on-site working. (I think there are times when an email or phone call just won't do.)
Are copywriters and business writers the same thing?
Yes they are. I'm a copywriter providing a business writing service, so I'm a business writer. In my role, freelance copywriter and business writer mean the same thing.
(Advertising copywriters work with art directors on advertising campaigns and are not considered business writers.)
So why do I call myself both? Well my official job title is "freelance copywriter", but SEO research has shown that the term "business writer" is more commonly searched for on the web.
(For more information on SEO copywriting, have a look at "my tips".)
Why use a freelance copywriter?
Many businesses need the skills of a freelance copywriter, but not on a full-time basis. So instead, they use a freelance copywriter like me to provide the business writing service they require.
The first advantage to using a freelance copywriter is only having to pay for the service when it's needed, rather than paying a full-time salary.
The second is that a freelance copywriter will work for a number of companies on a myriad of projects, which means they are constantly honing their skills and keeping their copy fresh.
It makes sense to book a freelance copywriter who is based near your business in case you need to have a face-to-face meeting with them. So if your business is in or near Manchester, use a freelance copywriter based in Manchester.
If you're a North West company using a London-based copywriter, it will hit you where it hurts the most – your pocket. It sounds straight forward, but you'd be surprised how many people don't follow this simple advice.
If you have copywriting jobs that need doing, get in touch and I'll explain how I can help.
Manchester versus London
There is a belief that if you can hold your own in London, then you're worth your weight in gold. With this is mind, many Manchester-based companies will use a copywriter based in the capital – and pay through the nose for their services.
If you're one of the people who believe this, you'll be happy to know that I spent two years working in London as a journalist for Readers' Digest and United Business Media.
So if you book me, you get a freelance copywriter based in Manchester who has London experience – and who charges Manchester rates!
About me
Before I became a freelance copywriter, I worked for eight years in consumer and B2B journalism, web editing and internal communications.
Since then, I have extended my copywriter portfolio to include marketing and public relations copywriting and write 'tone of voice' copy for company brochures and other branded material.
I also subcontract for design, PR and marketing agencies, providing them with a full business writing service. I'm a versatile writer able to take on a variety of copywriting jobs.
As well as a creative writing degree, I also have a Plain English Campaign Diploma. And I'm part way through writing my first novel, so you could say I was words mad.
